How to Measure pH correctly?

What is the use of pH Data Logger?

Monitor pH Levels using pH Data Loggers and Recorders

Monitoring and recording pH values in lab testing, aquariums, estuaries, lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans can be done with pH data recorders. While other units are better suited for long-term deployment applications, handheld pH data loggers are useful for spot testing and short-term investigations. The following content will help you to understand the factors of the measurement of the pH Data Logger.

Basic of pH Measurement

A solution’s hydrogen ion activity is represented by the pH value. With a high concentration of H+ ions, the pH scale ranges from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with a high concentration of OH ions in between. The most popular technique for measuring pH involves submerging a particular hydrogen ion selective electrode (pH probe) and a second reference electrode in the solution. The voltage output of this ion-selective electrode in relation to the reference electrode changes depending on the ratio of hydrogen ions inside the electrode to those outside the electrode. The output of the reference electrode is unaffected by the ion ratio. You may determine the pH of the solution by observing the voltage difference between these two electrodes. The determination of a solution’s pH, however, is more complicated than it might initially appear.

Ideas to Keep in Mind When Measuring pH Correctly

Accurate pH readings are difficult to get when using a straightforward voltage input data logger to capture the potential between the two electrodes.

1. A typical pH sensor has a voltage range of +400 mV to -400 mV, which corresponds to a pH range of 0 to 14 at room temperature. Positive and negative voltages must be accepted by any data recorder intended for pH measurements. Additionally, the tool must be sensitive enough to precisely monitor minute voltage variations. The accuracy and resolution needed to detect pH changes of 0.1 or less will be provided by a data logger with a full-scale input range of 1 to 2 volts; however, a logger built for 10 volts full scale may not be able to do so.

2. The pH electrode has a very high impedance. Although it generates a voltage, which develops across an ion-selective glass membrane, the electrode only sends a very small amount of current to the measuring circuit. For common voltage readings, a standard voltage data logger may have an input impedance of 1 Megohm. However, when measuring pH, the current drawn by this resistance results in loading effects that create significant inaccuracies in the observed voltage. To enable direct measurement from the pH electrode with minimal current draw, it is crucial to use a data logger with a high impedance input amplifier, often on the order of 1 gigohm or greater, such as the Delphin Expert Logger. If it is not possible to do this, pH measurements can still be made using ordinary voltage data loggers with an external preamplifier or a pH probe with an internal amplifier to create a buffered output signal and prevent input loading’s negative effects.

2. The most typical amplifier is a little battery-operated device that only offers voltage gain during buffering. These amplifiers may operate for months on a single battery because the currents are so little. There are further amplifiers that can run continuously for extended periods of time using an external DC power source. It is advisable to utilize an amplifier with a 4–20 mA current output if the pH electrode and data logger will be placed far apart from one another. As a result, there is extremely minimal accuracy loss or noise increase during transmission of the signal over distances of hundreds of feet.

3. The impact of temperature on the sensor’s output voltage is the final factor to take into account while measuring pH. As you move away from a pH value of 7 and as the temperature moves away from 25°C, the output voltage error gets worse. For instance, measuring the voltage output of a probe submerged in a solution of pH 2 at a temperature of 85°C without taking temperature into account can result in inaccuracies as high as.9 pH. In this situation, using a multi-channel data logger with temperature and voltage capabilities enables temperature measurement and correction.

DataTaker DT80 or Grant Instruments SQ16 intelligent, universal input data recorders can be programmed to measure voltage and temperature and then automatically apply the necessary temperature correction factor to provide an accurate pH value. Use a preamplifier as described above that also includes an automatic internal temperature compensation circuit as an option if the data logger is unable to measure temperature. These devices measure the temperature of the solution using an external sensor and correct the buffered output voltage accordingly.

Conclusion

Accurate, dependable pH readings can be achieved by using an intelligent data logger with the right input range, input impedance, and temperature measurement capabilities.
